Hello friends, supporters and potential adopters,

Unfortunately the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently announced a one year ban on dog imports from 113 different countries. Alas, China is one of the countries on this very extensive list. Any dog which is to be adopted in the United States, must be kept within Canada for a minimum of six months before crossing the US border.

This latest setback in our attempt to rescue dogs in China has led to a new adoption system for potential US homes. The biggest difference now being that an applicant from the US must be able to provide a foster home for the dog's six month stay in Canada. Upon the successful six months in Canada, you will be able to import your dog into the United States.

Anyone who currently lives in Canada and is interested in being a six month foster family for dogs destined for the US should get in contact with Karuna Rescue IMMEDIATELY.

Application for Adoption

Before completing an application for adoption, please read the following.

1. Overview - All of Karuna Dogs are rescue dogs. Some have suffered neglect, abuse, and unimaginable horrors. All applicants should have a clear understanding that the dogs arriving overseas, are most likely going to require an adjustment period. Karuna team members have spent countless hours with these dogs, and will always guide and support during this time.

2. Application Approval - Once we recieve your application we will contact you. We need to ensure you and your future furry companion are the right fit. For eg. Some of our dogs, we do not recommend for families with small children. We will always outline this in each dog's bio.

3. Fees - To offer a dog for adoption, we have for the most part spent thousands of dollars in vet care, neuter/spay, rehab. and boarding. We ask all adopters to cover the transport cost, including paperwork, for their newly adopted dog. As we solely rely on flight volunteers, we are often at the mercy of the Airlines available, and flight costs vary. But as a ball park figure you could expect to pay between 600 to 650USD for a smaller dog. And 700 to 850USD for a larger dog. Karuna makes zero profit on any of their adoptions. We simply need to cover basic costs.

Akitas are fiercely loyal to their humans, but can be a little too over protective. They need an experienced owner, who have a clear understanding of the breed.
